Chief Elections Officers Confirms Receipt of Port Loyola Recall Petitions from Governor General

Chief Elections Officer, Josephine Tamai, has confirmed that the Elections and Boundaries Department has received the petitions from the Governor General for the Port Loyola recall.  The recall, launched by former Area Representative, Anthony Boots Martinez, is a legal attempt to remove the current representative, Gilroy Usher Senior.  According to Tamai, she received the documents last Wednesday, February 21.

Josephnie Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, Elections and Boundaries Department: “Well when it comes to the recall I will tell you that last week Wednesday which was the 21st I received the petitions and so those verifications are ongoing. I have one month to conclude that verification exercise.”

Josephnie Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, Elections and Boundaries Department: “Right and so we’re doing several different things at the same time but legally once the Chief Elections Officer receives it then you have one month in order to do the verification and to issue a certificate back to the Governor General depending on the outcome of the verification exercise.”

The update is good news for Martinez, at least one would think so.  But the former minister is upset and has lashed out at what he says is an incompetence in the Office of the Governor General.  Just last week, Martinez held a press brief, lamenting over the delayed process.  Today, he called another press brief, saying he is getting legal advice on the delays experienced on the petition.
