As for the persistent rains in the south, the Chief Met Officer, Ronald Gordon explained to Love News that is the classic weather pattern when El Nino is in effect.
Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist: “Yes we experienced heavy downpours overnight especially over southern Belize. Our preliminary observations from our automatic weather stations down south showed that some areas received between four to seven inches of rainfall between last night and this morning. The highest was at Bella Vista where we recorded about almost seven inches of rainfall. This was related to a tropical wave that crossed the country coupled with unstable conditions at the higher levels of the atmosphere.”
Renee Trujillo, News Director, Love FM News: And in terms of across the country what other areas experienced rainfall ?
Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist: “Well we also had central inland parts of the country, the Cayo District receiving some rainfall but not as much. I think the latest figure I saw was about just over an inch of rainfall in Belmopan and further west. The north in particular did not receive any significant rainfall from this weather event.”
