Chinese Community Celebrates New Year

The vast majority of the world celebrates the New Year on January 1, with the exception of the Global Chinese Community who are celebrating their New Year today.

The vast majority of the world celebrates the New Year on January 1, with the exception of the Global Chinese Community who are celebrating their New Year today. The Belize Chinese Association (BCA) celebrations are usually sounded off by the non-stop echoes of firecrackers and fireworks.  This year, however things were taken down a notch due to the Covid-19 situation.  Love News spoke to the Chairman of the BCA, Johnston Au about how the community is welcoming the year of the ox.

Johnston Ou, President, Belize Chinese Association

Johnston Ou, President, Belize Chinese Association: “This year is totally different from the years past and we experienced something that we haven’t experienced before and something that we lack of experience to deal with and this is a big surprise for us and everybody across the board is experiencing a hard time. That’s why this year we don’t have any planned event for the new year only a certain individual they do a little small Lion Dance and so forth and that’s about it. In this pandemic I don’t think it’s a good idea to celebrate anything like what we had last year in the Independence Day, the Garifuna day there was no major celebration so we as part of the community we would like to do the same. You know we need to help each other hand in hand and get trough this. The year of the Ox means hard work, extra work and especially in this pandemic we need to work together hand in hand and we can fight this and we could overcome this in the near future.”

Johnston noted that he hopes to see things return to normal in the coming year that will be celebrated as the year of the tiger.
