Christmas Eve Shooting at Crystal Auto Rental: Targeted Attack, Not Robbery

Less than two hours later, Belize City Police were called out to Crystal Auto Rental on the Philip Goldson Highway where a man was shot at around four thirty on Christmas Eve.  Initial reports had indicated that it was a case of attempted robbery.  Since then, Police Commissioner Chester Williams, refuted that report, saying that investigators are looking at it being a targeted shooting.  When Police arrived at the business place, they found 53-year-old, Elmer Francisco with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder.  Reports say the two dark-complexion men went onto the compound and was inquiring about renting vehicles.  Francisco was explaining that there were no more available rentals, when one of the men on the red motorcycle, pulled out a firearm and shot Francisco.  Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero briefed the media on the investigation.

Hilberto Romero, Senior Superintendent of Police: “Caretaker who reported that he was on duty at the time when two persons arrived on a motorcycle. They inquired about a vehicle. Thereafter one of the male persons pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot towards him causing an injury to him. Elmer Francisco was taken to the KHMH where he was treated and has since been released. We are seeking two suspects in regards to this shooting. We have some footage and we’re looking at that. We’re not certain who was the target. Several leads are being followed up to try to determine what caused this shooting.”

Police are yet to make an arrest in this case.
