While streets in the city may soon be getting some attention, motorists remain concerned over the condition of the roads leading to the city. Several portions of the Phillip Goldson and George Price Highways within city limits are riddled with potholes. The situation affects the flow of traffic during rush hours and, according to motorists, causes damage to their vehicles. However, the road repairs do not fall under the Belize City Council, so, today, the City Administrator Albert Vaughn wrote to the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing requesting urgent attention.

Albert Vaughn, City Administrator, Belize City Council: “Many times people don’t understand that the council doesn’t have control of the highways and that includes the Central American Boulevard to the Port and Chetumal Street. That is under the MIDH. But what I have asked my team to do this morning is send a letter to MIDH and if it’s not done in a timely fashion we will have to go out there and put some little gravel or something in the hole just to make it a bit comfortable because the ministry it’s all over the country it’s not only Belize City and we must understand that no? And as I said if it continues to rain and we put stone in there it will wash it out and people will be more angry with us. We just need to take our time, when we reach the area that is torn up I am positively sure Minister Espat and his team will come. When I don’t know but I think pretty shortly right ? And we addressed that this morning so my team has sent off a letter to MIDH to say listen what’s your plan and we can go in and do a quick fix until they are ready right ? So yes we are addressing that as well but it’s terrible and I could understand but you can’t drive the same, you just can’t drive the same. Why are people hurrying, hurrying where they’re going ? And they break up their vehicle and as the reach the flour mill they slow down beaus the traffic stops right there they have to crawl back into the city. Take your time right ? Things will happen right ? This is a council about the people, we always have the people at heart but we can’t waste money when it’s raining. We can’t be fixing streets when it’s raining we have to wait and do it properly.”
Recently, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat recently stated that his ministry receives requests for assistance daily.
