Commerce Bight Pier Transformation Planned: Shift Towards Tourism

Commerce Bight Pier Transformation Planned: Shift Towards Tourism

The Commerce Bight Pier once provided for many families in the south, but in 2020, just before the general elections, the government gave Recological Services Limited a 25-year contract to manage the facility.  The pier was at the center of a controversy, until the Government took the matter to Parliament, and had the contract canceled in June 2021.  Fast forward to today, and the government says they are looking to transform the area into a tourism center.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “In Commerce Bight the PUP government has been promising the people of Dangriga from 2003 that we want to find a way how we can open the Commerce Bight. Obviously it could no longer be a cargo port because right close by you have a very modern cargo port with a draft that is about thirty feet so that the biggest of ships can come in dock alongside to offload. So we’ve been looking at different options.”
