Commissioner of Police Celebrates Lowest Murder Rate Since 2008

Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, is closing off 2023 with the lowest murder rate seen in Belize since 2008.   In his Christmas press release, the commissioner reported a twenty percent reduction in murders, noting that the murder figures have not been below 100 since 2013.  Whilst boasting of the murder statistics, Commissioner Williams expressed appreciation to the public for its cooperation, saying, quote, “The dedication and resilience of our officers, the collaboration with governmental and non- governmental organizations and the support from you, my fellow Belizeans, have all been instrumental in minimizing the scourge of crime and violence that continue to plague our communities.”  End of quote.  With renewed hope and vigour for 2024, Williams noted that come next year, they will be looking to improve the camera surveillance system countrywide, combat organized crimes, address issues facing youth and enhance the road policing strategy to target drug trafficking, firearms trafficking, human trafficking and smuggling, transient criminals and to reduce traffic fatalities on the thoroughfares. Police Commissioner’s release concluded by wishing all a merry Christmas and prosperity for next year, with a reminder that fighting crime is everyone’s business.
