Commissioner of Police on Joseph Budna
And while it is yet to be established whether the young man was a minor, the incident has brought to light, Budna’s questionable actions. The convict is no stranger to the media or the law. In 2019, Budna escaped from Guatemala where he was serving a twenty-five-year sentence for kidnapping and extortion, and made his way to Belize. In 2021, he was charged with two counts of sexual assault on a male minor and sent to prison. Today, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, explained that Budna is a known sexual predator, who is known to prey on young men in rural areas. Williams stated that the police have previously dealt with Budna, but at the time he claimed police abuse and was given air-time by the media to spew those allegations.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “This is the activity of this individual the adult male in this particular instance luring minors to engage in sexual activities and I mean male minors not females so it’s something that we’re looking at. We have been looking at this individual and the last time the police went after him it was you the members of the public who vilified the police for going after him but again it goes to show that when we do target these people and they run to you the media you tend to go on their side against us. At the end of the day like what Jules would say right we look for what is more sensational right ? And the allegations against the police that he had made then may be more sensational to you and so you all took his side and now here you are now clamoring for us to do something about him. But certainly we’ll do what can be done within the limits of the law to investigate and if there is any evidence of wrongdoing on his part I can assure you and the public that we will act accordingly.”
