Competency-Based Learning Implemented in Belize Primary Schools

Competency-Based Learning Implemented in Belize Primary Schools

Hundreds of students returned to the classroom this morning and are now being taught using a new method of teaching. Competency-based learning is now being implemented in primary schools across the country after it was first streamlined in secondary schools at the start of the year. The new strategy focuses on specific subjects and examinations to eliminate redundancy and concentrate on competencies rather than content. Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Louis Zabaneh, explained that after a year of fine-tuning the new curriculum, it is now being applied to equip students with the knowledge they need to excel in the workplace.

Dr. Zabaneh added that the new curriculum is expected to improve the academic performance of students.
