Following the incident closely, is the Police Commissioner Chester Williams. Williams told the media that the victim’s actions was brave throughout the ordeal, and applauded him for using social media to save his life.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “In terms of my visit with him we discussed what happened. He gave some very valuable information that we are working on and the night in question when this incident occurred, which was Friday night, I received some screenshots of his Facebook posts from a citizen who informed me of what was taking place and right away I got to the police and we mobilized to get on the island as quick as possible. We also contacted a person who was on an island nearby to go in before us to see what was the condition of Mr.Christian and that person did so, gave us a synopsis of the area and shortly thereafter the police arrived and we transported the injured person to mainland and then to Belize City to seek medical attention. I will commend Mr.Christian himself for being brave soul that he is. I believe that what he did largely contributed to him saving his own life in terms of going into the bathroom, locking himself in and was still able to go on social media despite his injury and share his experience with the world and so we were able to get that information. And then to the police officers who responded the sea was extremely rough that night and the citizens who assisted the police in getting out there despite the roughness of the sea I think we owe them a great deal of gratitude.”
