On the eve of 2020 the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams issued his New Year’s Message speaking of the crime rate and how they plan to address the situation. According to Williams, at the beginning of the year, ComPol expressed hope in reducing the murder rate by 10%.  The ten percent was not achieved but Compol says there was a reduction by six-point three percent.  He went on to note that when comparing major crimes for the years 2018 and 2019 there was a reduction by 134. In the senior officer’s written message, he cited alcohol consumption and domestic situations as being the two most dominant causes of homicides this year. While the Commissioner highlighted the good things done by the Police Department, he also mentioned the areas where they fell short. He stated, quote, “One of the areas we fell short in during 2019 is Public Relations. As a department, we must recognize the important role that the public plays in achieving our goals. We must, therefore, always strive to build a stronger relationship with the public.” End of quote. Police Commissioner Williams has committed that for 2020, drunk drivers and criminals will be the number one priority for the department.
