Tonight we can report that former UDP Minister, Rene Montero Sr., is in the United States of America. Police Commissioner Chester Williams told Love News that the wanted politician is in the US receiving medical treatment. Montero is wanted by the Belize Police Department and an Interpol Red Notice has been issued in his name. He stands accused of “gross irregularities and abuse of power” which the government alleges he committed when he was the Minister of Works under the UDP Government. Interpol’s Red Notice states that (quote) it was discovered that Montero Sr directed and permitted the use of Government of Belize property assigned to the ministry at Cayo District Unit, Santa Elena Town, to carry out work on his personal private property, family member’s property and close associates, therefore abusing the power of his office.” (End quote) Commissioner Williams told Love News that Montero Sr has given assurances that he would hand himself over to police upon his arrival to the country.

Chester Williams, Belize Police Department: “We have been looking for Mr. Montero but we do believe that he’s out of the country seeking medical attention.”

Reporter: Where do you believe?

Chester Williams, Belize Police Department: “Somewhere in the U.S.”

Reporter: We have an extradition treaty with the U.S.

Chester Williams, Belize Police Department: “The Interpol Red Notice is out and we believe that authorities in the U.S. are looking for him.

Reporter: But have you confirmed that he is getting treatment, medical treatment in the U.S.?

Chester Williams, Belize Police Department: “From all indications, yes that is what’s happening.

Reporter: But confirmed? Like actual proof or documentation that yes he is getting medical treatment?

Chester Williams, Belize Police Department: “Well I spoke to his son, who is an attorney, and he’s confirmed that his father is in the U.S. and is expected to return to the country within weeks and as soon as he returns, he’s going to bring his father in to the police.”
