Belize remains at an eighteen count for confirmed cases of COVID-19.  The last confirmed case was reported on Tuesday, April 13 and since then all tests conducted have proven negative.  As at three o’clock this afternoon, the Ministry of Health reports that 734 tests have been carried out to date and of that amount 18 were positive and 716 were negative.  There are currently forty-five under investigation.  The Government of Belize, however, is taking no chances on the COVID-19 pandemic as they have made amendments to the Emergency Powers regulations.  Statutory Instrument Number Fifty-Five and Statutory Instrument No. 56 of 2020 takes effect today, April 17, 2020.  Under these SI’s there are several changes including the curfew for minors which begins from 4 pm to 8 am daily, regardless if they are in the company of a parent or guardian.  Opening hours for banking institutions have been extended and cashiers at utility companies are now allowed to be opened for those wishing and able to pay their bills.  As it relates to restrictions of movements, Statutory Instrument 55 states, quote, “During the period of public emergency declared by Proclamation, no person shall move across any district boundaries nor across localities within any district, city, town, village or community except for the purposes listed in the regulation.” End of quote.  In other words, there are to be no movements from one district to another unless you are an essential worker.  Regarding our borders, all ports of entry remain closed and flights can only be authorized by the Ministry of National Security with consultation with the Department of Civil Aviation.
