A 22-year-old construction worker accused of using a stolen debit card for a shopping spree was arraigned in Belize City Magistrate’s Court. However, the case took an unexpected turn as the alleged victim expressed her desire to drop the charges. Today, Peter Amaud Lara appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola to face three counts of card theft. The charges stem from allegations that last week Lara came into possession of an Atlantic Bank debit card belonging to Mia Buller, which he used to swipe over $300 at three establishments. Prosecutors allege that Lara spent $12 at Chen’s Store and $240 at Zen Zen’s Supermarket, among other purchases. Initially, Lara pleaded guilty to two counts of theft, explaining to the court that he was handed the card by another individual who had stolen it. However, as he was about to plead to the third count, he reversed his earlier guilty plea after learning the complainant wished to drop the charges. From the witness stand, Buller explained that she had recovered both her debit card and her phone, which contained important work documents, and she did not believe Lara had stolen them. She said another individual was responsible for the theft and that Lara was merely used to withdraw money from her account. Buller further stated that she has been reimbursed for her losses and wants to put the matter behind her, citing the time-consuming nature of court proceedings. Buller told the court she’s acting voluntarily and wants no further action against Lara. Despite Buller’s request, Chief Magistrate Wegodapola was unconvinced that Lara should be absolved so quickly, noting that his actions in using the card were still unlawful and did not drop the charges. Lara was granted bail of $5,000, with two sureties of $2,500 each. The prosecutor has been directed to determine if the case can still proceed despite the complainant’s stance. Lara, who successfully posted bail, is scheduled to return to court on February 18, 2025.
