Construction Worker Convicted of Immigration Offense, Fined $1,500

A construction worker of Orange Walk Town was convicted of an immigration offense. 38-year-old, Jose Ruben Garcia appeared before Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford, and pleaded guilty to his crime. Ruben was caught traveling with an undocumented minor from Guatemala. The child had crossed into the country through the Mopan River and was being taken to Orange Walk by Garcia. On Friday, June 16, at around six o’clock, Immigration Department along with police from Belize City conducted random searches and found the pair traveling on a Tillett’s bus. The minor was unable to provide any form of documentation and was handed over to the Human Services Department while Garcia was taken into police custody. He was later handed over to the Belize Immigration Department where he was charged with facilitating the commission of a crime. He was fined one thousand five hundred dollars and has until August to pay his debts or face six months imprisonment.
