Consumer Prices down 0.2%

The Statistical Institute of Belize released its latest figures for January, which shows a decrease of zero point two percent in the prices of goods when compared to January 2018. The All-items Consumer Price Index went down from 105.0 in January 2018 to 104.8 in January 2019. The  category that recorded the highest increase in inflation rate was House, Water, Electricity, Gas and other Fuels with an overall increase of one point nine percent, mainly due Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices which went up by fifteen point four percent. In January 2018, the average cost of a one hundred pound cylinder of LPG stood at $99.74, and it went up by almost $16, costing $115.13 in January 2019. Electricity also went up by six point four percent due to a tariff increase. Meanwhile, home rental recorded a one point five percent increase. All Other Categories of Goods and Services also recorded an increase of zero point six percent. Transport recorded a decrease of negative six point four percent and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages recorded a decrease of negative zero point one percent.  For the month of January,  the Punta Gorda Town recorded the highest increase in consumer prices with an inflation rate of two point six percent. Meanwhile, Dangriga experienced the lowest inflation rate with prices going down by two point four percent for the month.
