Contractor General Omar Mitchell was attacked at his home on the Benque Viejo Road in San Ignacio Town on Sunday morning. Police were alerted at about eight o’clock that morning, and upon responding they found the 69-year-old with injures to the face and feet. Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch ACP Joseph Myvette confirmed to the media today that Mitchell was alerted by the barking dogs.
ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “He reported to police that sometime around 7 A.M he was alerted to his dogs barking and as a result he was alone at home but he eventually opened his back door and went out to investigate what the dogs were barking at and during that same time he was approached by a male person who managed to struggle with him and put him on the ground where that person was joined by four other individuals. They then escorted him inside his home where he was bound and left in some room inside his home whilst his home was ransacked. He later heard the sound of vehicles driving off, thereafter he shouted for his neighbor who came across to assist him and call the police, that is when he observed his two vehicles which is a blue Toyota Hilux and a blue Toyota Prado were stolen. Police are investigating this matter we have been able to follow some information that later on in the morning of yesterday those vehicles may have been seen going across into Guatemala through Arenal.”
Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa is tonight expressing concerns over the home invasion that occurred at the residence of the Contractor General, Omar Mitchell. Minister Musa confirmed that Mitchell’s laptop was stolen.
Hon. Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “There is another report of a home invasion this time out west I believe the Contractor General I think it was on Friday was the victim of a home invasion and so we have to be very very vigilant within the police department. We of course are looking at various leads we don’t have any suspects as yet. I am told that out west they stole his two motor vehicles and they tied him up, very very distressing I am certain for the Contractor General and so we definitely empathize with him and we’re doing our very best on the ground to crack down on these home invasions.
Reporter: Do you think that it may have been people from across the border? I think the report was that they spoke Spanish.
Hon. Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “The information I’m gathering on that particular incident is that we suspect them to be Belizean Hispanic because they were speaking broken English but with a heavy Spanish accent.
Reporter: And Imagine you will follow the lead that it perhaps may not have simply been a straightforward home invasion because they took his laptop he is the Contractor General.
Hon. Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “Most definitely we are looking at all angles. Whenever it comes to any crime against any individual in this country we have to look outside the box, think outside the box when we’re solving crimes.”
Omar Mitchell was appointed as the Contractor General in January 2020.
