Convicted Attorney’s Sentencing Delayed Due to Power Outages

After being convicted of abetment to commit murder in March, attorney Oscar Selgado was back in court today before Justice Nigel Pilgrim for mitigation. Members of Selgado’s family and several fellow attorneys were at the Belize High Court this morning to speak on his behalf. However, due to continuous power outages, the hearing could not take place. Fellow attorney Arthur Saldivar, who is part of Selgado’s legal team, says that there are several things the judge should consider as mitigating factors in Selgado’s case.

Saldivar said that Selgado has already filed a notice of appeal but that he needs to be sentenced for his conviction before that appeal can begin.

The mitigation hearing will be held on May 13. During that time, Saldivar is expected to go through the social inquiry report, psychological report, and the report from the Belize Central Prison, which was given to him by Justice Pilgrim.
