Convicted killer Shane Jones remains in legal limbo as he awaits sentencing for the manslaughter of Belize City resident Edwin Usher. Jones was convicted on December 19, 2024, following a judge-alone trial where video evidence showed him repeatedly stomping on Usher’s head during a brutal altercation. Usher succumbed to his injuries a week later. Initially charged with murder, Jones’ charge was reduced to manslaughter following the trial. This afternoon, Jones appeared in the High Court before Justice Nigel Pilgrim for a mitigation plea hearing, where his defense attorney, Norman Moore, presented arguments on his behalf. Jones had hoped to call a character witness to support his case, but the witness failed to appear in court. During the hearing, Jones addressed the court, expressing remorse for his actions. Jones’ attorney, Moore, also urged the court to consider his client’s medical condition. In 2024, Jones was shot and underwent surgery, but he is now suffering from complications while being held on remand. Moore suggested that Jones’ condition has worsened due to the prison’s diet. However, the court was also mindful of Jones’ criminal history, which includes prior convictions for violent offenses. Records show that Jones had been fined for harm in a previous case and served a five-year sentence for robbery.Justice Pilgrim took these mitigating and aggravating factors into consideration and requested Moore to address the new sentencing guidelines. The judge adjourned the matter until Monday, February 4, 2025, when he will deliver the sentence.
