Corozal Farmers Urge Government Action on Deplorable Sugar Roads

The Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA), has written to Prime Minister John Briceno, pleading for government to urgently address the deplorable conditions of sugar roads. The association acknowledged that the road repairs may be impacted by weather conditions but that the current situation is urgent as it is negatively impacting the farmers. The association challenged the government’s road repairs maintenance report, saying that the 90 percent completion of repaired roads in the report does not match the reality on the ground. The CSCPA has Wilfredo Magana, Chairman of the oversight committee for the Corozal Sugarcane Producers Association said that, with just one week into the 2024/2025 sugar crop, farmers are already seeing major damages to their trucks. Magana says that the road near Progresso Village is especially bad.

Magana added that the situation has forced some farmers to deliver inferior-quality cane to the mill because they do not have proper road access to crops that have better quality. Love News understands that some work began on the roads over the weekend./
