Corozal residents donate to persons in Belize City affected by Hurricane Lisa

Today, the residents of Corozal Town donated over eight thousand dollars’ worth of groceries to the Belize City Council (CITCO). The food drive was organized by the Corozal Town Council. The council then collected and delivered the goods, which will be disbursed among affected Belize City residents through City Hall. Mayor of Corozal Town, Rigoberto Vellos spoke about how the initiative came to fruition.

Rigoberto Vellos, Mayor, Corozal Town: “This afternoon we came to Belize City with a truckload of groceries on behalf of the people from Corozal from the Corozalenos specifically the business community, the Taiwanese community spearheaded by Mr.Tai San and several individuals, residents from the Corozal Town who made the special effort in coming to the town council and dropping off some groceries. Hence the reason why we decided today to come to Belize City to deliver the goods to the Belize City Council directly to Mayor Wagner. I keep on saying Lisa came to Belize City so Belize City today you never know tomorrow it can be Corozal or it can be Orange Walk or anywhere you know and as a country we must unite.  This is the perfect example how we as a nation nee to be very united to get things going and to move forward. You know we are in solidarity with Belize City residents and we will continue to support on another as mayors.”

Reporter: How long did it take you to pool together these resources and is there a dollar value ?

Rigoberto Vellos, Mayor, Corozal Town: “Actually immediately after the storm we put out the announcement through social media that we will start to collect groceries or whatever anybody can donate and I can tell you immediately people started pouring in to town council brining stuff. When it comes to the items I can tell you its rice, flour, ramen, corn flakes, milk, water you know the basic needs that people would need to be able to have something on the table and we’re proud of our Corozalenos making the effort for Belize City residents. On Saturday the whole Corozal on a whole the whole district will make sure that their presence is here in Belize City. Corozal Town Council, it’s members, it’s workers and I know that there are other people within the Corozal district that are moving machinery to make sure that we’re here on Saturday to assist the Belize City Mayor and Belize City on a whole.”
