Corozal Waterfront Project Nears Groundbreaking Stage

Corozal Town is on the verge of a significant transformation as a major waterfront development project moves closer to its official groundbreaking. First introduced to the public in 2024 under the banner of coming soon, the project has since progressed through various stages of planning and community consultation. What began as a hopeful vision for the town’s shoreline is now becoming a reality, one that promises economic revitalization, cultural enrichment, and environmental protection. Love News spoke with Mayor of Corozal Town, Rigo Vellos, on the final steps before the construction begins.

The project, aimed at enhancing key areas along Corozal’s coastline, has been shaped with the input of residents and key stakeholders. Initial public consultations laid the foundation for a community-driven approach, ensuring that the final design would reflect the values and needs of the people of Corozal. As of this week, crucial final consultations are being held with the Corozal Town Council, the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), and the Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development (SACD).  The planned upgrades are both ambitious and strategic. Vellos explained that the municipal pier will undergo modernization, improving infrastructure and supporting both local economic activity and tourism.

The project includes the uplift of a 0.4-acre park, which will provide enhanced recreational space for families and visitors. The fisherman’s pier, an important feature of local livelihood, will also receive much-needed upgrades, aimed at improving its usability and aesthetics. A new 90-meter walkway is planned to enhance pedestrian access and leisure opportunities along the coast. One of the most culturally significant components is a 0.5-acre Heritage Plaza, which will serve as a central gathering space celebrating Corozal’s rich history and identity.
