Corruption Reports Persist at Belize’s Vital Statistics Unit

Reports of corruption have surfaced time and time again at the Vital Statistics Unit (VSU).  Regardless of administration or which political party is in power, the reports have been heard time and time again.  It is an issue that the Briceno Administration had committed to tackle when they took office in November 2020.  The VSU falls under the responsibility of the Office of the Attorney General which is why it was a part of our interview with Magali Marin-Young.

Magali Marin Young, Former Attorney General of Belize: “You know, people always had – would tell us that it existed but members were shy. One or two step forward and we were able to deal with those. Those persons were transferred out of the vital statistics when we became aware of it. But it boils down to, you know, proper supervision. I can’t say 100% that we’ve eliminated it, but we certainly, I think, have curbed a lot of it. And I think the public officers are responding to, you know, training and better customer service.”
