Jaheem Young was sentenced to three months in prison today for burglarizing the home of his cousin. Young appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola and he pleaded guilty to burglary. He was initially charged with both burglary and sexual assault, but the sexual assault charge was adjourned pending further directives from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The incident occurred on December 22, 2024, when Young unlawfully entered his cousin’s residence on Freetown Road in Belize City and stole a speaker valued at two hundred and fifty dollars. While the prosecution argued for a harsher sentence, citing Young’s lack of remorse and the aggravating factor of his familial relationship with the victim, the Chief Magistrate considered his lack of prior convictions for dishonesty or violence. Young was also required to serve outstanding fines for previous drug possession and traffic offenses concurrently with his three-month sentence. The sexual assault charge will be addressed at a later date, scheduled for January 29, 2025.
