A two day workshop began today in Barbados that will be looking at a landmark study that concluded recently.  The study which focused on factors such as capital, labour, maintenance and energy costs, looked primarily at the rising cost factors on fishing operations in the Caribbean.  During today and tomorrow the stakeholders seek to chart the way forward in the fisheries sector in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization.  According to the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) the participants will propose workable policy options and strategies to improve efficiency, productivity and sustainability in the fisheries sector with an aim to improve competitiveness and profitability at the local, regional and international levels.  Presentations will be done the CRFM Executive Director, Milton Haughton and Economin Consultant, Beltran Turriago.  A final report will be issued following this workshop which will highlight the major findings and recommendations.
