Crime and the State of Emergency

There is another murder to report tonight which makes it four murders in the last four days.  We’ll tell you of the latest murder later in the news, but first we bring you the issue of rising crimes in the old capital.  Since the curfew got lifted on September 4, the gun violence in Belize City has reared its ugly head.  Police Commissioner Chester Williams says he is not oblivious to the situation.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “For the past week or so we had been extremely busy trying to locate PC Ical and so many of our human resources that we would normally use in Belize City to be able to deal with the anti gang operations were extracted out of Belize City and were placed in the jungle to search for PC Ical. Now that the search for Ical is over we can now go back and concentrate our effort in Belize City to see how we can deal with the gang issue. But may I say there are certain things that are being done currently and I guess some people have shown that they are not capable of living among people so you know what is going to happen right ? I say no more.”

Yesterday we told you of the shooting of a police officer on Ebony Street in Belize City.  Two minors have since been detained for questioning, but one of the mothers of the two suspects is crying foul.  Viola Smith told Love News yesterday that her home is constantly targeted by Police when something goes wrong in the neighborhood.  The media asked about this case to the Police Commissioner but he would not hear it.  Actually, it made him outraged.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “We catch people shooting people and when their mom’s come they say their innocent. For Christ sake I can’t answer everything the parents of people have to say. I don’t think they’ll ever say their children are guilty. I’m not going to respond to it.”

Reporter: They’re claiming that they’ve been targets of the police.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “They can claim all they want Andrea I’m not going to respond to it. That’s why the society is the way it is because too much parents that condone the stupidness of their children.”

The police officer shot was Wilbert Chi.  He has since undergone surgery and is in recovery mode.
