CWU refuses salary cuts by PBL

The Christian Workers Union (CWU) is refusing to accept the 10% salary cut imposed on their members employed at the Port of Belize Limited (PBL).  They are demanding that a financial expert designated by CWU review PBL’s accounts to be able to offer guidance on whether the option is fair and necessary.

Apparently, members do not trust PBL’s claims regarding the need for their proposed salary reductions. This is based on PBL’s failure to fulfil the stale Collective Agreement (CA) signed back in December 2002, the fruitless efforts to negotiation a new CA and PBL’s history of disrespect and disregard. CWU stated that while they appreciate that there is an ongoing crisis which requires shared sacrifice, the Union is duty bound to do its due diligence on Members’ behalf. They are expecting that PBL will put its unilateral decision n hold until there has been full disclosure which justifies that decision.
