Dangriga Mayor Condemns Fatal Shooting of Minor in the Culture Capital

The shooting death of 15-year-old Joshua Flores on Wednesday night in Dangriga is another incident in a series of what police suspect are gang-related crimes. Yesterday, Police Commissioner Chester Williams went to visit the town to allay fears that police are doing everything in their power to stem the spate of shootings. The Dangriga Town Council is also doing its part in this effort and according to Mayor Robert Mariano, one of the first things being done is to provide a police booth and street lights in the area. The Mayor spoke to our Stann Creek correspondent, Harry Arzu.

Robert Mariano, Mayor, Dangriga Town: “The Dangriga Town Council is providing a booth for the Police Department as requested by the officer commanding Dangriga Town Police station. They want to post two police officers to patrol the Back a Town area and so this will be the building that will house them so that they can do their work in this area. Recently we had several complaints of shootings within this area and so that is the reason why the police see it necessary to have police officers posted in this area and we at the council see it necessary to work along with the police to ensure that law and order prevails within Back a Town and Dangriga Town0 town in extension. This area if you notice this post right in front of this building doesn’t have a light but I have discussed with the person in charge of BEL and they are hopeful that as early as tomorrow there will be a light in front of the booth. If you look east of this building there is an alley right there and the people in that area are also complaining that at night the area is dark and so what I’ll be doing is I’ll be doing some ground work to ensure that that area be lighted because it’s important for the  people that live in that area to feel comfortable in their homes especially at night. I want to ensure the people of Dangriga that the town council will be working closely with the police department to ensure that law and order prevails within Dangriga.”
