Dangriga Police Inaugurate New Precinct to Enhance Community Safety

The Belize Police Department inaugurated a new precinct in Dangriga Town today. The building was built in the new site area of the municipality a notable distance from the first precinct. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams explained that the new precinct was necessary as the first building has been there since 1950. He added that the cadre of officers who utilize that precinct since it was built has quadrupled in size.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Dangriga Police Formation has been doing an exceptional job in terms of making sure that our objectives in maintaining law and order and reducing crime is upheld. We do understand and appreciate the fact that the current police station downtown is not serving the needs of Dangriga people from a security standpoint the way we’d like it to be done and more so the police have outgrown that facility. That station has been there from 1950 and at that time Dangriga or Stann Creek district only had about fifty police officers, not the Stann Creek Police district has almost two hundred police officers so you’d see that they have outgrown that facility and so the need to decentralize was very important and it’s the spirit of decentralization that we decided that we need to put another police station in Dangriga and again the New Site area being expanding so tremendously was chosen as the location to put the next police station. So we’re here today to ensure that we inaugurate the station as well as to make sure that we put the requisite resources in place to be able to police this area.”

Williams says that the building was donated by construction company owner Imer Hernandez.
