Dangriga Residents Receive Land Services in Effort to Address Land Issues

Land services are provided in Dangriga. Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde and the Land Department will be in Dangriga for 2 days providing residents of Dangriga with land services. The Land Clinic is held at Russell Chiste Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga. They aim at addressing the various land issues being faced by Belizeans.  The clinic was also developed to ease the long lines and backlog at the main office in Belmopan. The Deputy spoke to Love News about his aim to “solve land problems immediately, ensuring that people’s lands are in their hands.”

Cordel Hyde, Minister of Natural Resources: “Essentially, lots of different land issues. Not so many new lots today, but lots of issues that have been there for many years, in some instances, some 2014, 2015. But we’ve seen issues ranging back to 2006. That’s the whole purpose of bringing the land clinic to the people, bringing the land department to the people, bringing the lands department to the residents of Dangriga and to other areas so that we can deal with the issues in front of them. Often times people go to Belmopan and they are turned around or the process is cumbersome or tiresome or expensive. Once you bring the mobiles to the community then we’re able to deal with things in an immediate kind of way because we have the entire department and we’re able to solve problems and that is what this is about, solving problems, ensuring that people’s lands are in their hands and that they get their titles or their purchase approvals, their leases or their permissions or survey. As I said, all these things are have been languishing for some time and we have to help the people of Dangriga in the best way we know how. We also have, in some instances, people have already gotten their purchase approvals for land in Silk Grass they want to get their titles so they’ve applied in some instances in other instances they’re only just now paying and will apply and hopefully we can get those done over the next couple days and in the case of Hope Creek for new landowners they are able to apply for lots there too so that’s what we’re working on these couple days.”

Land issues include the conversion from lease to title, and issues that are faced with having a survey done. Police Officer Carlos Santana Galvez mentioned that his visit to the land clinic has been very productive.

Carlos Santana Galvez, Dangriga Resident: “For the past 18 years I have been turned around, up and down by both administrations and I have never ever been given the chance to see the minister and today that  he is here I mean we can’t go wrong with that. I would take the opportunity to really appreciate what he is doing. It’s a very good deal for us here in Dangriga to have the minister and his crew from Belmopan here. Whenever you go to Belmopan or you go there the lines are long, you get a number that is in zeros, high digits, and whenever the time comes to see the minister oh he’s not in or you need to go see this one first you need to go see that one first, oh the office is closed, you need to come back again and people get fed up and tired of being up and down. We don’t have money, we don’t have time to be up and down looking at a piece of parcel of land not guaranteeing if you’re going to get it at the end of the day.”

First time land owners in Dangriga can also take advantage of paying $500 for a lot that has been surveyed in the Silk Grass and Hope Creek area. The program is a part of the Plan Belize mission.
