Darrell Bradley comments on audit done by current City Council

BRADLEY ON AUDIT

Two weeks ago, Mayor Bernard Wagner boasted about his Council’s 9% increase in revenues and how they managed to cut costs. He also lamented on the previous administration’s reckless spending, which, according to Mayor Wagner, was confirmed via an audit done by Cedric Flowers. Yesterday, the media got an opportunity to speak with the former mayor of Belize City, Darrell Bradley. He stated that in his two terms as Mayor, his administration accomplished a lot.

Darrell Bradley, Senate President: “One of the things I will be mindful of and I’ll be very careful here, if you’ve noticed and I’ve made a deliberate thing to do this because I’ve been on several talk shows and people have given me the mic and I have refrained from it. There’s a certain value in politics which I think needs to be said, I have not once, not once uttered a negative word about the current Mayor of Belize City. That person is my Mayor, I’m a citizen and resident of Belize City and I want the City Council to do well. I can stand here confident and say that when I was Mayor of Belize City, Belize City did well. I won two elections and by wide margins so that I had the confidence of residents of Belize City. That time in terms of my leadership has been closed; I did well, nobody can say I did anything improper, irregular or whatever. Maybe there would have been policy directions that another political party, another leader would have chosen otherwise, that’s their choice. So that a new person is in that space and it is for them to prove to the Belizean people that they can do well. I would only add here that government is not about saving, so that when you have  a surplus in your bank account that is no victory for any administration. A government exists to deliver goods and services to people and the main focus of municipal government is the physical infrastructure of a city, the physical infrastructure and no one can say that in relation to the major focus of Belize City we were not on par, we did not do all we could to inspire confidence and to deliver what was our core objective. We also did significant other public works projects; BTL Park, Memorial Park, Battlefield Park, I earlier mentioned the issue of unionizing staff, tremendous work on the municipal services regulation which is a major victory for all municipalities across this entire country something which I think should go further in relation to formalizing it and solidifying it.”

Bradley also stated that he would prefer to hear from the opinions of individual Belizeans on his time as mayor.
