Depression and the Depressed in Belize

Mental disorders have been a somewhat taboo subject in Belize, but discussion on the subject has begun, starting with depression, which was this year’s focus on World Health Day. Depression affects millions of people. An estimated 350 million people globally are living with depression which is now a leading cause of disability. But what is it? Depression is a disorder with a biological basis that is accompanied by physiological and social implications. It can be debilitating and, in some cases, deadly. It remains under diagnosed in Belize but health professionals have started to encourage Belizeans to talk about it.  The following story is a brief look at what the situation surrounding depression and mental disorders is like for Belizeans and health professionals.
