The Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has been nominated for accreditation to the Adaptation Fund (AF) to support the Government of Belize in mobilizing grant funding to target climate resilience. Today in a press release, the Ministry of Economic Development announced the nomination. Accreditation of the DFC will enable Belize to mobilize grant funding and advance plans for a climate-resilient housing project designed to protect essential infrastructure and support local livelihoods. The accreditation process requires rigorous evaluation to confirm that nominated organizations meet global standards for fiduciary management, transparency, and accountability. With its proven experience in sustainable financing and development, the DFC is well-prepared to meet these requirements and to work collaboratively with the government and community stakeholders on adaptive, sustainable projects. Belize’s vulnerability to climate change is notable. The IMF ranked the country as the third most susceptible to natural disasters and fifth most vulnerable to climate change among small states in 2008. With 43% of Belize’s population living in coastal areas and infrastructure valued at approximately US $4.6 billion concentrated near the coast, the country remains exposed to hurricanes and rising sea levels. The government has pushed for climate adaptation funding to focus on building resilient housing through co-financing models that attract private domestic investment. The Adaptation Fund, established in 2001, plays a critical role in supporting developing nations by financing projects that help them adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. Its funding supports initiatives ranging from improved water management and coastal protection to enhanced food security and community readiness for extreme weather.
