Dickie on Arrest of Gang Members

In the past few months, we have seen more and more Belize City Southside men being charged for being a member of a gang.  This is part of the Police Department’s crime-fighting strategy. But, Attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley says that the rights of these men are being violated.

Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Attorney at Law: “They are indiscriminately picking up young men and charging them for being a member of the gang. Why ? Because on some fence in the neighborhood there is some insignia or whatever or when they were recklessly youth, they had some whatever tattoo and so. That is really an abuse of the rights of people.”

Reporter: Waste of time charge?

Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Attorney at Law: “It is also a waste of time charge.”

Reported: But if investigators and police officers they have their intel to charge these persons. The Commissioner said that they’ve been investigating for the past couple of months that’s why they charge these persons.

Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Attorney at Law: “Listen we have to get really serious in our criticism of the system that we are living under. If a man belongs to a gang let him be charged and go to court but to indiscriminately be picking up young men. They use the same information you know? They belong to the Southside gangsters, they belong to the- you should hear some of the new names that are popping up. Why do they belong to that gang sir ? Because they have a tattoo, because they were out smoking, because there is a picture on Facebook oh my goodness. I know you belong to several gangs just by the signs that you have been making it’s not fair man we want a just and fair society.”
