The Belize Police Department is investigating some of its own after a shooting incident occurred this past weekend in the Arizona Area of Teakettle Village in the Cayo District. An unidentified young man who had illegally entered Belize was shot in the right knee by police officers while he was being pursued. He was taken to the Western Regional Hospital where he died. This morning, Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvette detailed how the shooting unfolded.

“Police responded to a report of a robbery that has previously occurred on the 3rd December. The complainant accompanied police to an area behind Tea Kettle Village known as Arizona. Upon the police’s arrival with the complainant the suspect was pointed out by the complainant and when approached by the police the suspect attempted to make his good his escape and was pursued by the police. During the process, the suspect received one apparent gunshot injury to the right knee. He was immediately taken to the Western Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the suspect at this time is unknown. He is a male Hispanic descent person who had seemingly moved into the Arizona area some four months ago and was living in an abandoned vehicle. Police have since commenced simultaneous internal and criminal investigations into this matter which is ongoing as we speak. The investigation is in its early stages and the officers are being interviewed at this time. According to the complainant, he was robbed sometime on the 2 of December in the same area where he lived and had made a verbal report to the police and at the time of the incident was accompanying the police to the area where he then pointed out the suspect to the police. I believe it was a knife robbery and property was taken from the victim during the robbery.”
The shooting victim is of Hispanic descent.
