Director of Immigration says Belizeans allowed entry into Belize

A press release issued by GOB yesterday reminded Belizeans that borders are closed for entry. As such, Belizeans are being strongly advised against leaving the country, unless it is a case of bona fide emergency. As it relates to the western, northern and southern borders, Belizeans, diplomats residing in Belize and foreigners with legal residency in Belize are allowed to enter. This clarification was made yesterday morning by the Director of Immigration, Debra Estrada, who called into Love FM. She stated that while Belizeans are allowed to come home, they are still subject to a screening and isolation process.

Debra Estrada, Director of Immigration: “I want to make it abundantly clear to all Belizens and to the world that in fact Belizeans can come home, Belizeans will be received any of our ports of entry from wherever they are coming from and therefore I’m asking the public to kindly refrain from sending out these unreasonable and untrue information. This morning indeed I understand that we have some students and so on at our northern border but the situation is that indeed our system is a little bit overwhelmed at the time, our health system, and therefore we have advised that in fact the health personnel will be on the scene or will have been on the scene to take care of these individuals. Whilst it is that we want our Belizean to come home they also need to be mindful that because of the situation with the coronavirus that they need to be screened and therefore those persons that were at the controls needed to have waited for the health officials. We need to be careful and yes whilst I said that they can come home from wherever they are in this world as long as they reach our borders but we have some conditions that have to be met which means that they will have to be screened by our health officials and have to be advised whether they go into self isolation or quarantine as per the health protocols. When they arrive at the border the health official does a screening and the health official will then advise them to how they will proceed whether they go into self isolation or whether they would go into quarantine and so let us be mindful that we don’t want to create undue and unnecessary panic and we ought to be responsible people when we are putting these information out there.”

Guatemalan nations can depart from Belize to return to their home country. In terms of the Philip Goldson International Airport, Belizeans are not allowed to leave Belize. Starting today, the airport will be closed for entry after the last scheduled flight departs. No restrictions have been placed on incoming or outgoing freight and cargo in any of the ports, including the Seaports.
