Dismissal Proceedings Initiated: Belize Coast Guard Moves to Expel Convicted Seaman

The Belize Coast Guard has begun the process to expel Keyren Tzib from its rank and file. Last month, the 33-year-old seaman was convicted of attempted murder after shooting her colleague, Kurt Hyde.  The incident occurred nine years ago as a group traveled from San Pedro to the Belize City headquarters in the Coast Guard boat.  Since the shooting, Tzib has been on interdiction from the BCG but is now being dismissed from her post following the guilty conviction handed down on March 13. BCG Commandant, Rear Admiral Elton Bennett, explained the process.

RADM Elton Bennett, BCG Commandant: “Not as yet. She was found guilty of attempted murder in the courts. After she has been sentenced then the documentation will follow to our office outlining the details of that award in the criminal court and that documentation is what we would use to forward to the services commission for the dismissal to take it’s place.”

Reporter: But she’s on interdiction ?

RADM Elton Bennett, BCG Commandant: “Yes she’s on interdiction. She has been on interdiction since the incident.”

During the trial, Tzib claimed the shooting was accidental.
