Dispute between Neighbors Ends in Conviction for Property Damage

A misunderstanding between two neighbours ended with one being convicted in court, and the other suffering losses in his business.  42-year-old, Fred Lloyd Lofter, appeared unrepresented before a senior Magistrate where he was read a single charge of damage to property. It is alleged that on Sunday at midnight, Lofter reportedly slammed a motorcycle belonging to James Young.  Young says he was inside his apartment on Canon Dale Drive, Belize City, when someone began stoning his room door and shouting at him from outside.  According to Young, Lofter then damaged his parked motorcycle.  Lofter pleaded guilty and told the court that Young has been provoking him for a while now. The complainant told police that Lofter was walking up and down in front of his door, yelling and threatening the complainant that if he called the police, he would punch him in the face in front of the police. For his guilty plea, Lofter was fined $405 including the cost of court, and ordered to pay this amount by June 28 in default of 4 months imprisonment. Additionally, Lofter was ordered to pay the complainant compensation of $150 by May 30.
