Doctor Can a Beloved Health Care Worker

Dr Jose Can – by all accounts, his passing leaves a vacuum at the Northern Regional Hospital. We rejoin Vejea Alvarez who takes a deeper look into the life of the father of five and devoted son.

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: The tragic and sudden death of medical doctor Jose Can has hit hard at the Northern Regional Hospital where he worked for several years. By all accounts Dr.Can was a vital part of the hospital’s vaccination team and played an instrumental role in the district’s high vaccination numbers. According to the Medical Chief of Staff at the hospital Dr.Manuel Estrada, Can’s death will take some time to sink in.

Dr.Manuel Estrada, Medical Chief of Staff, Northern Regional Hospital: “It will certainly have an impact because first of all everybody that works here for us is like a big NRH family so his loss is felt by everybody not only the team for vaccination but across the hospital and the impact he was somebody that was always there, he was very proactive in the vaccination and this will certainly affect the way we continue vaccinating and it will have a long lasting effect.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Dr.Can was a beloved healthcare worker and his mother Emiliana Can says that his childhood dream of being a doctor became reality due to his hard work and dedication.

Emiliana Can, Mother: “My son was a good boy. He liked school a lot. He was very intelligent. I always worked hard to give him his studies. He graduated with honors then he told me he wanted to continue his studying but I didn’t have the money to support him in his studies. So he told me that he was going to work to continue studying. He was working for four years and then when he had enough money he decided that he wanted to continue studying. He told me that he was going to Cuba to become a doctor and then he left and only communicated with my by phone. I will miss my son and his hard working character.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: The good doctor’s family isn’t the only one mourning his death. Joy Almendarez who worked along with Can says the news of his death is something she’s having a hard time understanding and accepting.

Joy Almendarez, Colleague: “I got the news early this morning and you know it was oh my God I couldn’t believe it. Yesterday we were out there doing vaccinations, we work together on a daily basis out there so up to now I still can’t believe that this is true that he isn’t here anymore with us.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: While Can will no longer be able to share his infectious smile with the hospital staff this evening a candle lit altar was put up in honor of the fallen hero who Almendarez says was dedicated to serving the people.

Joy Almendarez, Colleague: “I can definitely say working along with him he was very humble, dedicated to his job. I know that everything he did out there because of the love of his job and his dedication to serve all of his people.”
