A cadre of doctors was deployed to the Western Health Region to perform as front line workers in the Covid-19 response. Cayo Correspondent Fem Cruz has the details.
Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: A couple days ago the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan received a donation of a brand new house and a COVID-19 testing booth and now today a staff of six from Cuba have joined forces with them. Dr.Javier Zuniga, the Western Region Manager, spoke about the six additional staff.
Dr.Javier Zuniga, Western Region Manager, Western Regional Hospital: “Indeed the Western Health Region has been supported now with an additional ten staff members from the Cuban brigade Brigada International Henry Reeve. For the Western Regional Hospital we have two medical doctors, three nurses and one radiographer and the San Ignacio Community Hospital two doctors and two nurses now posted there from this brigade. These doctors, nurses and support staff will complement the cadre of staff we presently have in supporting the COVID-19 response in those areas so Belmopan and San Ignacio. They will be deployed to the front line to assist with coverage and to give care to patients with COVID-19 infections. We’re truly grateful for the needed assistance since our hospitals continue to be short of human resources and during this time of public health emergency it is indeed a blessing. They’re presently doing orientation to get them up to par with the policies and guidelines of the Ministry of Health after which they will be incorporated into the normal rotations just like the rest of the staff. We would like to thank the Cuban Government and the people of Cuba for always supporting Belize in time of medical crisis.”
