Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly: Murder Suspect Ends Life in Custody

The case of a murder over the weekend has compounded after the suspected killer ended his life in a cellblock.  The entire ordeal unfolded on Saturday morning in Libertad Village, Corozal District.  Reports say that the couple, 41-year-old, Breeann Kyle and 20-year-old, Jaquan Smith, had gotten into a domestic dispute when the boyfriend allegedly stabbed Kyle in the presence of their one-year-old child.  The woman reportedly texted a relative in the United States appealing to them to save the baby.  The relative became concerned and sent a taxi-driver to go to the house to see if everything was okay.  When 59-year-old, Avilio Urbina Senior arrived at the house, he found the woman crouching over on the sofa, apparently dead.  He contacted the Police, and the child was taken into the care of social services.  The entire ordeal was compounded when Smith, who had left the crime scene, got into an accident between miles 74 and 75 on the Philip Goldson Highway.  Police Commissioner says this is where Smith was first encountered by the Police.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Police eventually detained him and he was taken to the Corozal police station while police had gone to his home in Libertad to investigate. Upon police arrival there the lifeless body of his wife was found inside the home and police also found a shallow grave that was being dug and believe it was dug with the intent of disposing of the body of his wife. He eventually told the police that someone had gone into the home and killed his wife and he was trying to bury the body instead of reporting it to the police. Nonetheless the police did not buy that story. All indications were that he was the one who actually killed his wife. As a matter of fact there was some collaboration from a family friend of the wife whom were notified by the wife’s parents that something was going on at the house between the two and the family friend was summoned to go to the house to secure the safety of the child which the family friend eventually did. So the investigation was ongoing and this morning the police went to clean the cell block and the male prisoner was still in custody alive and well and police eventually left to go and retrieve the prisoner’s food and returned ten minutes later. Upon their return they found him hanging from the bar of the cell with his long pants that we was wearing at the particular time. So we are currently dealing with that matter now as a case of suicide. At this time we don’t see anything wrong that the police would have done or any negligence on their part because cell block checks are normally only done every half an hour and for them to have checked ten minutes prior and he was alive and well and they only went to ge the prisoner’s food and came back and found him hanging I really don’t see how we could hold the police officers accountable. From what I am getting there was nothing to indicate that he would have committed suicide. But part of the protocol that we normally do is to make sure that whenever we have a prisoner in custody whether there are signs of them wanting to commit suicide or not we would normally take away items from them that we believe they can use to commit suicide. So like a shoelace, a belt or anything of that sort but we cannot go to the extent of removing a person’s clothing, that would be tantamount to cruel and inhumane treatment. So that’s the extent we normally go to.”

Smith was taken to the Corozal Community Hospital where investigators met him to get a statement.  Instead of getting a statement on the actual accident, Smith told the Police that someone broke into his home and killed his wife.  Smith was detained pending further investigations.  The case took on another twist just before eleven o’clock this morning when Police found Smith hanging inside the Corozal cellblock.  Reports say he used his trousers as a noose to commit the act.  Meanwhile, the father of the deceased arrived in Belize this morning, and is cooperating with the authorities.
