DPP Comments on Jared Ranguy Case

On March 8, accused triple murderer, Jared Ranguy, will learn what his sentence will look like if he pleads guilty. Ranguy’s trial continued virtually, today, in the Belize High Court, to further his attorney’s request for a sentencing indication. Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl Lyn Vidal, said that the parties have to submit documents to the court by tomorrow as part of the process. While the case has been before the court for near twelve years, Vidal says that the time will not be a factor the defense can weaponize.

Cherylin Vidal, Director of Public Prosecution:  “They have asked for sentence indication. We are to send the agreed facts to the court tomorrow and then the judge will give his indication on the adjourn date.”

Reporter: Ma’am this matter has been before the court for some years, is it a concern that the defense might say “justice delayed.”

Cherylin Vidal, Director of Public Prosecution: “The defense has been the reason for the delay in the matter. They will not be able to allege that now.”

Ranguy stands accused of the 2012 triple murder of his mother, 51-year-old, Karen Skeen-Vellos; her husband, 72-year-old, Richard Vellos; and her daughter, 32-year-old Teena Skeen.  The sentencing indication will be the second one Ranguy has received in the trial. Back in 2023, his then attorney, Orson Elrington had applied for the first. At that time Justice Ricardo ‘Neil Sandcroft, indicated that Ranguy would be facing three life sentences, without the possibility of parole before forty years. Justice Sandcroft would later recuse himself from the trial, causing another delay.
