Dr Louis Zabaneh, PUP Senator and politician, has published the second edition of his book, ‘The Sustainable Human Development of Belize’. The book explores putting humans first, as the first chapter is entitled. According to Dr Zabaneh, there is plenty of brand-new research and information in the second edition, so much so that it is practically a new book. He explained more of what the book is about.
Dr.Louis Zabaneh, Author: “Well in the first edition I had stared out with the basic principles of sustainable development and human development and showing how those concepts are a positive evolution from the traditional ways we look at development. So I had that foundation already and then I had the great privilege to do two years of research in the United States in the fields of higher education, sustainable human development and those two years provided quite a bit of the broader perspective, the deeper analysis and the additional data and information. It has a new chapter on leadership and it is vital to recognize that we are led by people not by policies written on paper or on documents that end up on shelves it is people so that chapter lays out ideas, theories, concepts of how we look at leadership. What is leadership and then we look at examples of great positive leadership in people like for example Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King etc and then we also look on the other side of looking at example of pseudo leaders, people like Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin etc. So then that chapter I think is a very important addition to the first edition.”
Dr Zabaneh also stated what he believes the main takeaway of the book should be.
Dr.Louis Zabaneh, Author: “We need to find new ways of looking at development, new ways of understanding development and in fact we always say we will seek best practices but best practices come from better ideas. So the ideas in this book are what I would call the frontier of thinking and application in the field of sustainable human development. It actually brings together the thinking from two very closely related fields that of sustainable development and that of human development and it looks at the four main areas that are very important whenever policies are developed helping leaders to be able to have a set of tools that will make their decisions more relevant to what the needs are and therefore more successful and those four areas are; the institutional, the economic, the social and the environmental. When all of those are looked at holistically then you have a greater chance to really be serving the purpose of your policy.”
The book is sold for $20 and is available across the country. It can be found at BRC Printing in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, Pop’s Restaurant in San Ignacio, and Dakers in Belmopan – all in the Cayo District; Chatoyer Book Store in Dangriga Town and Tony’s Super Store in Independence – both in the Stann Creek District, and at the Image Factory in Belize City.
