Dual Weather Systems Threaten Belize: Heavy Rains Expected Tonight

There are two weather systems in the region that are headed in Belize’s direction and one of them could start bringing rains as early as tonight. The National Meteorological Service is closely monitoring the two systems, one of which is expected to bring more than four inches of rainfall. Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says that the chances for the first system developing into a tropical depression are slim since it’s so close to making landfall.

Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist: “Currently we are, we will be affected very shortly by a tropical wave accompanied by a broad area of low pressure that is approaching the area. It is currently near the northeastern coast of Honduras, moving westward or west-northwestward at 15 miles per hour. That system has a very, very small chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm before reaching us. That chance is quite small. The system is going to be affected by land quite soon. So development is quite unlikely. However, regardless of any tropical cyclone development, that system will produce an increase in rainfall across the country. Those should start tonight and continue through Friday into Saturday as the system crosses the area. We are seeing maximum of about four to six inches throughout the three day period from tonight through to Sunday morning so about four to six inches by the models and we know that these are model estimates, you can have locally higher values so residents should be on the alert for heavy rainfall.”

Gordon says that the other system, which is further out, has a greater chance of developing. That system will not be an issue for the country until sometime next week.

Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist: “Projections are just one thing. So like I said, you could always have locally higher values. I believe what you’re referring to is our station at La Democracia which for that event recorded about 13 inches. So you can have locally higher values and you saw what the effect of that was on the highway. So fortunately, in that case, the bulk of it wasn’t in a population center such as Belize City. And that’s the unfortunate thing about these predictions. You’re cannot say for certain what particular spot will get the highest amount. So certainly we do advise residents to be on the lookout for heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding for the entire country, but especially coastal locations, central coastal locations that includes Belize City and even the north of the country. I guess persons are looking at another system further out to the in the Atlantic and that one has a higher chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within about the next three days or so. Model projection has it moving towards the lesser Antilles sometime around Monday of next week. And that’s another system farther out coming into the Caribbean. And thereafter, there’s a lot of divergence in terms of where it goes. So we need to monitor that one also very carefully, but that’s something that we would be if it….if it does materialize as a threat for the country would be until sometime next weekend, or to the end of next week, I should say.”

In light of the forecast, the Belize City Council issued a weather alert earlier this evening. The council is calling on commuters to and from the city to exercise caution due to the possibility of flooding. The council also urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay updated with the latest information from official sources.
