Duo of Bulgarians Sentenced for 18 Counts of Theft

Two Bulgarians, Georgi Petrov and Halid Aptula, who had pled guilty to eighteen counts of theft, will serve one year in prison. They were given jail time today by Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser who told their attorneys, they pled guilty and saved the court time but she believed that their actions were too deliberate and a fine in her view was not appropriate. She sentenced them to three months for each of the first four counts with the stipulation that the sentences are to run consecutive to each other. She sentenced them to three months for the remaining counts with the stipulation that the sentences are to run concurrently to each other and concurrently to the sentence for the first four counts. Therefore they will serve one year. Petrov had stolen six tthousand eight hundred dollars and Aptula had stolen eight thousand dollars from Belize Bank. The prosecution indicated to the court that it will make an application for the forfeiture of twenty one thousand dollars that the police found when they searched the apartment that Petrov and Aptula were occupying. Attorneys Oscar Selgado and Crystel Wilson made submissions to the court that the money should be returned to their clients and Senior Magistrate Fraser has set July 23 to give her decision.
