Eco-Friendly Pest Management: Belize Launches Biological Control Insectary Expansion

In a significant step towards sustainable agriculture, the Biological Control Insectary Expansion Project was inaugurated today. This promotes a form of eco-friendly pest management. The project focuses on the mass production of beneficial insects to combat invasive species, restore ecological balance, and support farmers in achieving healthier, more productive crops. These insects are essential for controlling pests like aphids, whiteflies, and caterpillars, which often devastate crops and lead to heavy reliance on chemical pesticides. Love News spoke with the Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai on the difference this is expected to make.

Biological control is a scientifically proven strategy that involves increasing the population of natural predators to manage invasive species. By fostering a balanced predator-prey relationship, this method promotes symbiosis within the farming ecosystem, reducing the need for harmful chemicals and enhancing biodiversity. Mai expressed that farmers will have access to affordable, environmentally friendly pest control options, reducing their dependence on synthetic pesticides that can harm soil health, water systems, and human well-being.

The inaugural ceremony was held at the Agricultural Show Grounds.
