Eddie Webster Resigns as Clerk of the National Assembly

Today was the last meeting of the House of Representatives that will see Eddie Webster officiating as the Clerk of the National Assembly.  In a story aired on June 19, Love News learnt of Webster’s resignation purportedly due to irreconcilable differences with the Speaker of the House.  Fast forward today, and the Speaker of the House, Valerie Woods, has bid farewell to Webster, confirming that the National Assembly has received the acceptance letter from Governor General Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam.  While no explanation was given for the sudden departure, Woods and Prime Minister John Briceno presented Webster with a plaque for his years of service.

Valerie Woods, Speaker of the House: “Mr. Eddie Webster. Mr. Eddie Webster has completed 14 years of service with the National Assembly. His family joins him in the gallery, and we would like  to publicly acknowledge his years of committed service to the National Assembly of Belize. If you would allow me please a round of applause for the service of Mr. Eddie Webster. Today marks Mr. Webster’s last sitting of the House of Representatives. Perhaps not as rambunctious, Mr. Webster, but it is the last sitting. And his effective date is the 30th, but operationally today would be the last day. Thank you, Mr. Eddie Webster.”

Eddie Webster has been an institution at the National Assembly in Belmopan as he has been serving as the Clerk since 2010.  He worked in parliament for a total of 16 years and in the capacity of clerk for fourteen years and two months.  He has been the longest serving Clerk of the National Assembly since Belize’s independence.
