Tonight, a prominent educator from the Corozal District is dead after she was hit by a vehicle a stone’s throw away from her home. Around six o’clock on Sunday morning, sixty-eight-year-old Julia Gongora was riding her bicycle in Corozal Town when she was hit by a vehicle and fell to the ground. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo, the driver of the vehicle is currently in police custody awaiting to be charged.

Alejandro Cowo, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City: On yesterday’s date at about 6:50am police visited an area between Torres Street and 7th Avenue in the Corozal Town where they observed a female who was being placed inside of an ambulance and she was taken to the Corozal Community Hospital where she passed away sometime at about ten in the morning. What police know so far is that the deceased is Julia Hilda Maria Gongora 68 years was riding her bicycle from a north to south direction when a vehicle being driven at the time by one Mr.Kumar, 40 years, was driving on Torres Street South heading towards College Road when upon reaching in that intersection he knocked down Ms.Gongora causing her to fall to the divider where she had received injuries to her body. So far Mr.Kumar is in police custody and is awaiting for charges to be levied against him.”
Gongora taught at a number of schools in the Corozal District and had also taught abroad.
