Elderly Man Not Recovering From A Bad Beating in Southern Belize

An elderly man from the Toledo District is hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after being badly beaten. Correspondent Paul Mahung reports.

“60-year-old, Orlin Sabal remains hospitalized as a result of a Saturday night incident in his home community of Jacintoville. Sabal’s wife, Elena spoke to Love News of what she knows of the unacceptable incident.”

“On Saturday night I sent my husband to buy a fried chicken and he went to buy the chicken. This young man came to my house and I told him because we don’t want him in the yard at all because we knew him as someone who always made problems in the village. I told him to get out of the yard. He said okay and he left. When he left he went back to where he came from not knowing that my husband went after him. I was waiting and waiting but my husband didn’t come back. I told my daughter-in-law that he had been gone long not knowing that he was getting beat up. Later on in the evening someone came to tell me that my husband was all the way at the hospital. I asked immediately what happened to him. They said that the young man beat him. I told the person that I didn’t know what to say about him. The police need to do something about that boy, they just can’t leave him out here walking around the road and people here are saying that he is wanted by the police. I don’t see why the police will leave him out there.”

“What kind of injuries did you husband suffer?”

“Well he got three or four chop wounds or cut wounds, I don’t know, in his head but he got it in his head and over his eye is swollen. He has a few missing teeth.”

“Is he still at the Punta Gorda Hospital?”

“He was transferred to the Dangriga Hospital and from there later on in the night he was transferred to the Belize Hospital and he is not recovering at all. That man, I don’t know, those police have to do something about that boy, that boy will cause so many things and he will do some bad things to people from the village because he’s someone who is always giving problems.”

“Elena Sabal commented that her whole village is well known, peaceful and friendly community and such an unlawful incident is not acceptable nor condoned. It is believed that the motive of the incident could have been for personal reasons since there is no indication that the motive was robbery. Acting upon information police were in Jacintoville yesterday and have arrested one male person believed to be in his twenties in connection to the incident.”
