On Sunday evening sometime after five o’clock, 86-year-old Irma Celis, a resident of San Martin area of Belmopan was injured in a motorcycle accident. The elderly woman was reportedly crossing the street when she was hit by a motorcycle being driven at the time by 19-year-old student, Jose Coc. Celis received serious head and body injuries. She was taken to the Western Regional Hospital and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City where she died a few days later. As a result, Coc has been charged with causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention and contravention of a learner’s permit. At the time Coc told Police he was on his way home when he saw the elderly woman attempting to cross the street. He said he attempted to serve to avoid running into her however the motorcycle slid and he ended up hitting Celis.
